The Challenge
A client required a routine service and inspection of multiple wastewater treatment assets across their site to ensure systems remained operational, compliant, and capable of delivering effective treatment.
Whilst the primary treatment plant appeared to be functioning normally, there were concerns that ageing infrastructure and isolated treatment assets may be creating operational and environmental risks that required further investigation.
The client needed a comprehensive assessment of the site’s wastewater treatment infrastructure, together with recommendations to address any issues identified during the inspection.
Our Solution
Our engineers attended site to carry out a full service inspection of the wastewater treatment systems, including:
- Biological treatment processes
- Pump operation and controls
- Final effluent quality
- Sludge levels
- Treatment plant condition
- Control panel functionality
- Site infrastructure and access
The purpose of the visit was to verify operational performance, identify any maintenance requirements, and highlight any potential risks to the continued effectiveness of the treatment systems.
Delivering the Inspection
During the service visit, the main Gatehouse Treatment Plant was found to be operating effectively.
The inspection confirmed:
- Good spray distribution from the central spray pump
- Controls operating correctly and within set parameters
- Acceptable biomass growth
- Acceptable visual effluent quality
- Overall plant condition satisfactory
As part of the service, vegetation and weeds obstructing access to the treatment plant were removed to improve accessibility and support future maintenance activities.
However, the inspection also identified two significant concerns:
Primary Settlement Tank Lid
The lid to the primary settlement tank was found to be heavily corroded and deteriorating.
This presented a potential health and safety risk and was identified as requiring urgent replacement to prevent future incidents.
Secondary Treatment Asset Investigation Required
A separate treatment area located near the site mess room was found to have:
- No operational pump
- No blower system
- No control equipment
As a result, no treatment was taking place at this location.
Further investigation was recommended to determine:
- Which buildings discharge into the system
- Whether there is an active outfall
- Whether the asset is functioning as a holding tank or forms part of the wider treatment process
An additional treatment asset at the far end of the site was also found to be isolated and non-operational pending further investigation.
The Outcome
The service confirmed that the site’s primary treatment plant was operating effectively and delivering good treatment performance.
More importantly, the inspection identified critical infrastructure and compliance risks before they had the opportunity to develop into larger operational issues.
By highlighting these concerns early, the client was provided with a clear action plan to improve safety, understand the status of the remaining treatment assets, and ensure ongoing environmental compliance.
