Environmental Compliance Restored: Interceptor Filter Replacement

The Challenge

Routine inspections identified that the filter within a forecourt surface water interceptor had become heavily saturated with oil.

When interceptor filters become contaminated, their ability to effectively separate oil from surface water is significantly reduced. This can increase the risk of pollution incidents, environmental non-compliance, and potential contamination of downstream drainage systems.

The client required a safe and effective replacement of the filter to restore the interceptor’s performance and ensure continued environmental protection.

Our Solution

Following an assessment of the interceptor, our team proposed a full filter replacement using confined space entry procedures and specialist lifting equipment.

Given the location of the filter within the interceptor chamber, the works required a man-entry operation and careful handling to ensure the saturated filter could be removed safely and replaced with a new unit.

Delivering the Works

Our engineers attended site and implemented a controlled confined space operation to access the interceptor chamber.

The works included:

  • Tanker attendance to remove liquid from the chamber and provide safe access
  • Confined space entry using an A-frame and winch system
  • Removal of the saturated interceptor filter
  • Installation of a replacement filter
  • Reinstatement of the filter into the interceptor chamber
  • Refilling and commissioning of the interceptor system
  • Secure bagging and removal of the contaminated waste filter for disposal

All works were completed in accordance with safe working procedures and environmental best practice.

The Outcome

The replacement filter restored the interceptor’s ability to effectively manage contaminated surface water runoff and separate hydrocarbons before discharge.

By carrying out the replacement promptly, the client was able to maintain compliance and reduce the environmental risks associated with a saturated interceptor system.
